Sir: In his Budget speech, the Chancellor asks: 'Why should the bus driver or the pensioner also pay higher taxes to finance the living costs of tomorrow's lawyers?'

As a first-year mature student, entirely dependent on my grant, my question is: 'Why should anybody have to pay higher taxes to finance the living costs of today's politicians?'

Yours faithfully,

HUGH IRVINE
