Sir: I am excited at the prospect John Smith describes of 'a high-skill, hi-tech, high-wage economy'. Is this in any way related to the 'white-hot heat of the technological revolution' that Harold Wilson decided Frank Cousins would tend after the 1964 election, after he had spent a lifetime trying to stem the tide of industrial change?

Some practical steps to attain this goal from John Smith might help convince the electors - more and better resourced city technology colleges, higher pay, status and rewards for government and academic scientists?

Yours sceptically,

EDWARD TEAGUE
