I should have more sympathy with Turkey's efforts to recover artefacts from abroad ('Turkey takes on a Herculean task', 6 April) if I felt confident they would be properly cared for when returned.
Early this year I visited the extensive and well-excavated ruins of the 6th-century church of St Polyeuktos in central Istanbul. The site was utterly neglected and part was being used, quite openly, as a shooting range for air rifles.
Yours faithfully,
