TERESA POOLE ("Cola wars break out in China", 23 August) asks if the Chinese people's Future Cola is "the world's first patriotic cola". No, it was Coca-Cola. When America joined the Second World War in 1941, one of its greatest anxieties was that the rationing of sugar would restrict Coca-Cola supplies. Roosevelt broadcast: "...we are fighting for the American way of life and, therefore, the right of every American man and woman to drink one bottle of Coca-Cola a day".
Coca-Cola's patriotic nature became a social reality through public demand, that of Future Cola through the demands of a government.
