Sir: I am told that the late Dwight Eisenhower once said:

Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.

Perhaps we shoud remind John Major of this. I can hear the rumble of an approaching express in the Channel tunnel.

Yours faithfully,

S. J. GOODALL
