Letter: The 'Spitting Image' Jesus: blasphemy or a lack of understanding?
Sir: I would like to respond to the remarks (report, 12 October) of Bill Dare, the producer of Spitting Image. I am a young, Christian wife and mother, and I try to live out this faith in my daily life. Mr Dare says that 'most people who are truly religious take this (the portrayal of Jesus as a Spitting Image puppet) in their stride and aren't particularly bothered'.
I am amazed at Mr Dare's confidence in attempting a description of true religion, exemplified by people who 'take things in their stride'. The New Testament description is somewhat different:
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27)
Hardly a description of someone who 'takes things in their stride'.
Mr Dare also pronounces that 'it's only the nutters, really, who object to it'. Well, I personally do object to it wholeheartedly. Whether or not I am a nutter is not, perhaps, for him to say.
Yours faithfully,
