Sir: The most dreadful thing about Melissa Rapp's reproach of the British tourist in the US is the unmistakable ring of truth. The mildness of the language (until the last sentence) only enhances one's recognition of the weary contempt it conceals for a narrow-gutted, unimaginative people. As an ordinary Englishwoman, I feel impelled to send a sincere apology for her experiences, only hoping that the speed of reply will add some value and weight to the contrition.
