Letter: Third World debts

Sir: Steve Leib (letter, 21 May) does not have to turn himself into a country to have his debts cancelled. All he has to do is file for personal bankruptcy.

Unfortunately, countries cannot go bankrupt, which is what they are if they are unable to pay their debts. Those who suffer most - the ordinary man, woman and child - have not contracted to any agreement whatsoever with the northern creditor, unlike Mr Leib. The political leaders who instigated the debts were wined and dined by our leaders and have subsequently been deposed.
