Sir: I was interested to read the article by Christian Wolmar and John Arlidge about the proposed car-free estates ("Escape from chock-a-block Car City", 5 September) on my return from spending two weeks in one, Christiania in Copenhagen.
The Christianites have solved the problem of manoeuvring themselves, their children and their shopping around by developing a reversed tricycle with a large box between the front two wheels.
The 25-year-old community of 900 boasts all social amenities, including a post office, a nursery and a surgery. When they do venture into Copenhagen, they are aided by a comprehensive cycle network.
Yours sincerely
Tom Mowlam.
