Sir: I find it remarkable that Lord Plant believes that the single transferable vote electoral system would be 'too complex' for British voters (Politics & Policy, 21 January). Irish voters have enjoyed the benefits of STV for decades without showing any great signs of confusion. Perhaps Lord Plant's opinion reflects the view all too prevalent among politicians that they know best and that if only hoi polloi would keep quiet for a while, they could get down to the serious business of ruining the country.
Or perhaps Labour's view is that recent voting patterns suggest British voters really are stupid.
Yours faithfully,
FERGUS SULLIVAN
