Sir: Sam Boote's letter (1 December) , suggesting that global warming is due to changes in the sun, not carbon dioxide emissions, misses the point.
We are not in an area of black-and-white science here, but in the much more tricky one of risk analysis. Given the enormity of the potential threat to world economic and social stability , plus the practical and political obstacles to progress in reducing CO2 emissions, the current aim must be to reduce the risk to manageable proportions.
We have a long way to go to achieve this. Failing to make a positive start at Kyoto would represent an immense gamble.
