Sir: As one who has no party political affiliation, I find the headline on your front page today, 'Tories demand tax cut lifeline' (14 June), profoundly depressing.

Surely anyone with an ounce of common sense must want to have a government that seeks a proper balance between necessary expenditure on public services and taxation levels. The failure of the present government is that it is presiding over a decline in public services while imposing increases in taxation.

The increases in taxation that it has devised impose the greatest burden on the poor and the least on the rich. Is it surprising that the electorate has seen through the window-dressing?

Yours faithfully,

J. G. SCADDING
