Sir: The decision of the Secretary of State for National Heritage, Virginia Bottomley, not to renew the contract of Adele Biss, director of the British Tourist Association and the English Travel Board, once again demonstrates the Government's negative attitude to tourism (14 March).

Over the last three years the tourist authorities have demonstrated a vigour and determination which previously had been missing from the various tourist boards.

Tom Pendry, MP, the Labour Shadow Tourism Minister, was right in describing Adele Biss as "a driving force for good with a single-minded determination". The loss of her marketing expertise is tragic for the industry.
