Letter: U2's attempt to make the world see sense

Sir: Thank you for Giles Smith's review of the U2 concert at Wembley Stadium (13 August). As a resident of U2-ridden Dublin it lifted my heart to see 'the posturing, the self-aggrandising gestures and the parading of conscience' exposed in such stylish and no-holds-barred prose.

What a pity that fame has not spurred this egotistical rock band to stick with what they do best - composing and performing music. To dip self-righteously in and out of the horrors of the world, to squeeze, for example, a Sarajevo soundbite between songs is simply patronising and attention-seeking.

Yours faithfully,

ROSLYN J. DEE
