Letter: University charges would deter poorer students

OUR Government seems to feign interest while consistently cutting spending on education. Your front-page article was thought-provoking. What happens to the poor and to those who have parents who can afford it but refuse to pay fees?

Students are already encouraged to take up loans which are far from the interest-free bargains the Government promised. If elite and comparatively rich institutions such as the LSE are struggling financially, imagine how difficult it is for the recently converted polytechnics. I dread the thought of living in a society (like the United States) where money buys knowledge.
