Letter: US going green

Sir: Mary Dejevsky's picture of an irresponsible and wasteful US (3 October), defying the rest of the world's attempts to go green, is not the whole truth.

US petrol emission norms have been much stricter than European ones for 20 years. My hired 3-litre Chrysler, on a recent holiday, did 38 miles per US gallon. Like most US cars, it used 87 octane petrol, much cheaper to refine. Rail freight has now recovered to haul nearly 40 per cent of long- distance goods. We surely need to compliment America before we criticise.
