Letter: War crimes: neither forgiven nor forgotten

Sir: The issue of Nazi war criminals and their prosecution has long polarised the opinions of thinking people. Colin Welch asks apropos the so-called 'Ivan the Terrible' trial, 'could we not in all humility call it a day?' Surely the answer is a resounding negative, especially in view of the Balkan horrors we are confronted with daily. Abnegation of the responsibility to punish the kind of crimes cited in these trials is an abnegation of our own humanity and a clear message to today's butchers that time is an acceptable solvent of guilt.

Yours faithfully,
