I HOPE John MacGregor, the Transport Secretary, read Christian Wolmar's article on road pricing ('The fast lane to more traffic jams', 30 May) although given the Government's attitude to transport, I doubt it would make any difference.
Here in East Sussex the Department of Transport wants to expand the A27 east of Lewes and destroy vast acres of downland at a cost of tens of millions of pounds.
Yet the railway line, the 'Coastway East' service, could be improved for a fraction of the cost. The Department of Transport will not even consider this option. We all suffer in this country from the refusal of the Government to look seriously at any transport option other than roads.
