Sir: The remarkable discovery of the Iron Age fortress at Le Yaudet ('Asterix's home village is uncovered in France', 1 April) lends weight to the boast of the villagers that Le Yaudet was the only part of occupied France to withstand invading forces during the Second World War. When I visited the village, from the youth hostel where I was staying at nearby Gravillons, during the course of a cycling holiday in 1973 the locals displayed a natural pride in their pocket of resistance. They attributed it to the presence of the basilix, a tropical lizard not found elsewhere in Europe, which could transfix enemy soldiers with its gaze.

I can heartily recommend the local delicacy, Lobster Bix.
