Michael Howard justifies his panicky plan for "boot camps" by quoting the low re-offending rate among discharged military prisoners from the Colchester Glasshouse ("Welcome to boot camp, boys", 14 April).

Hardly surprising really ... but you would hope that even he might know that most military ex-cons are kicked out of the services as part of their punishment.
