WALTER HAYES ('My Biggest Mistake', 19 December) asks why protectionism is a sin. Maybe someone should tell him customers want better quality, longer lasting, higher specification cars than Ford builds. Hayes underestimated the Japanese because he underestimated the importance of quality.
