Letter: Wide net that misses talent Selectors will face dilemma

The England cricket selectors' policy of casting the net wide to include several new or relatively untried players for the one-day series against Pakistan raises several concerns ("Knight makes a day of it", 1 September).

Firstly, it highlights the fact that there are plenty of "good" county players around, but little to choose between a dozen batsmen and as many bowlers.

Secondly, one must wonder what a player such as Alistair Brown is to think, having scored a century in the one-day series against India, then discarded for the Tests, but not recalled for the following one-day series.

Thirdly, how can players perform with any confidence when they don't know what sort of performance will ensure them continued international cricket: I think of Hussain and Crawley?

When the selectors choose the winter touring squads, they are bound to end up with too many players in the frame, but too few confident of continued selectorial support to encourage genuine and optimal performance.
