THANKS to Tim Hilton for prompting a further appreciation of The Wilton Diptych ('Between Heaven and Earth', Review, 26 September). However, on the motif of the broom plant there is nothing to unravel. Rather than being specifically French, it was the badge of Geoffrey of Anjou leading to the dual name of the dynasty (1154-1485) Angevin (from Anjou) and Plantagenet (which derives from the Latin for the broom plant).
