l GEORGE II had distinguished himself at Oudenarde, and again demonstrated his courage by fighting at the head of the army at the battle of Dettingen, only two years before the Jacobite rebellion, over which he refused to take alarm ("But what if he had won?", 13 August). He actually returned from Hanover to London in late August 1745, and had no intention of flight.
