l THE caption to your article "Athens lifts head above cloud of car-blown smog" (1 October) says that replicas of the crumbling caryatids adorn the pollution-wracked Parthenon. This is incorrect. The caryatids partly support the roof of the Erechtheion, a sacred shrine on the other side of the Acropolis. The roof of the Parthenon is supported by 46 Doric columns.
