Sir: I was fascinated to hear one of my pupils, contemplating a university course next year, tell me in a recent lesson that if she took out a student loan, she would have to start to pay it back when her salary reached £16,000.

As a violinist in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, it has taken me some 25 years in the profession to reach that level.

Yours sincerely, JONATHAN TAYLOR Broadstone, Dorset 1 February
