Sir: To answer Marie Paterson's question (letters, 1 October), the reason women today dislike being called ladies is that we want equality with men. "Lady" is acceptable if the equivalent term for a male in the same context would be "gentleman". To use "lady" out of a sense of respect for a female which would not apply for a male is patronising and insulting.
