From Mr Brian Gascoigne Sir: In his article "Whoops! There goes a double negative" (31 January), Andrew Palmer quotes Man Ray as saying: "La photographie n'est pas l'art." In the exhibition catalogue, Merry Foresta attributes it as "Art is not photography", a very different, and much more surrealist, kettle of fish.
Who is right, or did Man Ray say both, just for fun?
Yours sincerely, BRIAN GASCOIGNE London, NW3
