From Mr Michael Fanning

Sir: Patrick Cosgrove (letter, 15 May) is wide of the mark with his remarks on the constitutional status of the Northern Territory of Australia.

The Northern Territory, formerly administered from Canberra, the federal capital, has had statehood for more than 10 years. As it happens, it has made a far better go of it than our other territory-turned-state, the Australian Capital Territory - which is still fighting about whether it really wants self-government at all.

Yours faithfully,

MICHAEL FANNING

London, W1
