The British people deserve better than Boris Johnson and Michael Gove

Michael Gove’s appearance on The Andrew Marr Show was not easy to watch – a masterclass in uneasy calculation. He would never, for example, “block” the Prime Minister from doing the right thing – a statement hinting at aims far beyond his pay grade. Furthermore, he does not “know” what the British mother currently imprisoned in Iran was doing, but fully accepts her husband’s statement on the subject.

Clearly he calculates that his current hard-Brexit alliance with the increasingly discredited Boris Johnson is more important than anything else. Until, that is, he changes his calculus at some point in the future. Democracies do often get the politicians they deserve, but, with all our faults, the British people deserve far better than this.

Of course Boris supports bull-fighting

Why would Boris Johnson not support bull-fighting? He inhabits a world where the garish, exhibitionist display is everything and the good, admirable and noble are destroyed in the interests of popularity.

Theresa May is letting everyone walk all over her

Theresa May simply cannot face confrontation.

During her election campaign she dealt with handpicked audiences and shunned debate with her rivals.

In the face of Ministers she appointed “going rogue” she gently admonishes, but allows them to stay until public pressure becomes too much.

The EU challenge her and she trips over to Brussels to “plead” a case.

This is a leader whose personal discomfort with direct confrontation is obvious and the EU will now capitalise on the advantage that this gifts them, as would any good negotiator.

Which leaves us…? All at sea.

Lillith the lynx did not deserve to die

I am outraged by the needless shooting of the 17-month female lynx, Lillith, by a marksman on the orders of Ceredigion Council. I believe the decision was based on ignorance and prejudice and is certainly not based on the facts and the known behaviour of this animal. There are no recorded stalking or attacks on humans, in fact, they usually zealously avoid human contact.

It’s appalling decisions like these that have resulted in Britain being one of the poorest nations in Europe for biodiversity.

I hope those who made this shocking decision will be brought to account by local people as soon as possible.

European unity should be celebrated on Remembrance Day

Just a brief “Remembrance Day” thought. Had the European Commission existed in 1914, there might never have been the First and Second World Wars, and the consequent bloodshed. THIS is probably the lesson we need to learn before we proceed with Brexit.

Can we please have one Christmas without an awful Agatha Christie adaptation?

The last two Christmases were sullied by versions of Agatha Christie’s work that had little to do with the style of the queen of crime, and extended to the inclusion of language that Christie would never have dreamed of deploying. If then, for whatever reason, we are to be deprived of another Yuletide offering by the same team, it will indeed be a time to be joyful.
