Ian Parker's profile of Peter Tatchell (Review, 11 December) questions the ethics of outing but ignores the strongest justification of all: self-defence. When closeted gay public figures harm the gay community their hypocrisy and homophobia deserv e to be exposed. Lesbians and gay men have a right to defend themselves against bigots, including bigots within their own ranks who should know better than to harm other gay people.
