The party that ejects the person (either Worzel Corbyn or Aunt Sally May) currently masquerading as a “leader” first will win.

Upholding liberal values

I just took out a trial subscription and the very first editorial I read concluded with the following statement: “While The Independent holds to the absolutism of equal rights for all, the language of moderation, toleration and mutual understanding is the best way to defend them.”

Let’s just say it’s an encouraging start! Bravo for taking a principled stand.

Break away from England

Here is a possible solution to this whole Brexit conundrum.

Let’s have an independence referendum in England, then England can leave the UK and the EU, with the sensible Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish remaining as a United Kingdom within the EU.

Apologies to those in the north of England, and the southwest, but you may have to fight your own separatist battles to separate from the “little Englander” rump who still believe that Britannia rules the waves.

Make Earth Hour nightly

Global cities have turned off lights and turned on solidarity to highlight energy waste since the first Earth Hour in 2007. The annual global event that encourages households and businesses to turn off non-essential lights for a single hour, has resulted in huge electricity savings and importantly has not compromised community safety or security.

Imagine the potential cost and power savings from home dwellings and city buildings, other than their monitored entrances and exits, being allowed to bathe in the dark night sky each day of the year. The lesson here is to identify and reduce waste in our daily lives in order to buy time to sort out our energy woes.

Skyscrapers in our central business districts do not need to be lit up like Christmas trees when workers have left for the night. Elevators are roused to life only when users are identified by weight sensing rather than being left in perpetual motion by default.

Free Tibet

Internet giant Google has been working on a search engine for the Chinese market: Project Dragonfly. Dragonfly would censor information on human rights abuses in Tibet and give the Chinese security services access to the data of people making searches. These dangerous plans have been opposed by Tibetans, Uyghurs, Chinese dissidents, human rights defenders and Google’s own employees. Get involved – tell Google’s executives to stop Project Dragonfly. Go to the Free Tibet website to take action.
