Labour's U-turn on Brexit strategy shouldn't come as a surprise

Labour’s U-turn on Brexit is no surprise to anyone familiar with its leader
Labour’s U-turn on Brexit is no surprise to anyone familiar with its leader

It will come as no surprise that cardboard Corbyn has, at geriatric pace, realised he should have actually campaigned to stay in the EU. I am suffering not-surprise as he U-turns on staying in the single market and all that entails.

Corbyn has managed to do a Conor McGregor. The Labour leader talked big to win popularity and establish a falsely elevated position having been given a wild card entry, creating deceitful expectations among the naive. Then the real world punched him on the nose and he’s now going down in a display of nonentity. Except this affects real people and for a long time.

Like many my wife and I initially reacted [to Brexiit] by registering in Spain and intend to apply for residence in the near future.

Our initial reaction that Britain had turned itself into an intolerant, jingoistic and alien place has remained but there is one important aspect that Remainers should appreciate: the fear that you cannot stand up for staying in Europe is unfounded.

Funny pro-EU bumper stickers, EU smartphone covers and so on are ways in which you can support you views without feeling that you are sounding shrill. A low-key amused approach is the the British way.

Impeaching Trump isn’t helpful to the Democrats

While I agree that on constitutional grounds Trump should not be impeached there is also a more pragmatic reason why Democrats should stop his impeachment.

The US constitution has built-in damage control so the downside to Trump’s presidency is mostly embarrassment that the holder of the office is driven by a desire for celebrity status with no capacity to think through any policies.

At worst he will continue to try and undo anything Obama did out of spite for being in his shadow. If Trump is impeached Mike Pence will be far more effective in implementing the small-minded, socially divisive soundbites underlying Trump’s campaign, causing more lasting damage to the US and its standing in the world.

No one who respects the monarchy should have a problem with Camilla being queen

It should be remembered, even in the 21st century, that a woman in the UK takes the rank of her husband when she marries. Camilla is Princess of Wales even if she does not use that title for fear of offending Diana fans, and uses her husband’s second title instead making her Duchess of Cornwall.

When Charles succeeds to the throne, she will become queen consort. There should be no problem with this and two precedents spring to mind. Anne Boleyn became queen consort in 1533 when Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon; and Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152 when she married Henry II after her marriage to Louis VII of France was annulled for failure to produce an heir.

We did vote to cut ties with Ireland

“No one voted to end the special ties between the UK and Ireland” said the Prime Minister. No, they voted to leave the EU and that has to include the ties with Ireland.

How can she just decide what people’s motivation was for leaving the EU as she sees fit? Why doesn’t she say “no one voted to leave the single market” or ”no one voted to leave the customs union” or, “people believed the lies they were told and voted to increase spending on the NHS.”

Surely this idiocy can’t continue much longer.

A leaked exam seems like the least of the problems we should have with Eton

I don’t understand the fuss about the leaked exam questions at Eton. Surely, one more layer of unearned advantage for Etonians is small beer in the broader scheme of things?
