How can David Leitch ("The spy who rocked a world of privilege", 8 December) regard as "now largely extinct" the "wistful Pooterish aspiration to being a gentleman"? John Major, consciously or unconsciously, has clearly modelled himself on that gent par excellence Anthony Eden, who, though another hollow, passive man, had the proper accoutrements for the part, the correct front. Major lacks these and, trying to emulate the Savile Row look, has instead the appearance of the tailor's dummy.
