LETTER

THE Lanes certainly is a major centre for the antiques trade today, but there was no antiques trade in Brighton during the Regency period ("If your antiques have been stolen, head for Brighton", 18 February). There was the beginning of a luxury goods trade (jewellery, leather goods etc), but this was not based in "The Lanes", which has its origins as a quarter for the fishing community.
