AS Margaret and John are of different generations in relation to their common ancestors, the relationship between them is not equal ('Major and Thatcher', 15 May). So, while John is Margaret's fifth cousin once removed downwards, Margaret is John's sixth cousin once removed upwards. However, as Geoffrey and John are of the same generation they are each other's sixth cousins.
