MIKE BUTLER makes much of an analogy with Chaucer's 'Miller's Tale' in his long analysis of the 'meaning' of 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' ('Lives of the great songs', Review, 18 September), despite lyricist Keith Reid's admission that 'I've never read a word of Chaucer in my life.' The reason many pop songs appear pretty nonsensical is that they are nonsensical. Nothing wrong with that. But do, please, spare us the lit. crit. treatment.
