YOUR outdated and pejorative use of the word 'retard' in the Sunday Review (Tom Hanks, 18 September) is the kind of language which con tributes to the misunderstanding and prejudice faced by people with learning difficulties, so indirectly encouraging a climate in which abuse can occur.
