IN HIS article on Julian Barnes ("The heart of a man of letters", Review, 2 April), Henry Porter points out that "clever male novelists portray women". However, Mr Porter was not clever enough to check his memory of Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece about Emma Bovary, for he proceeds to give as an example: "Flaubert and Emily Bovary".
