The inclusion, in the middle of a full-page article on the war in Chechnya, of a photograph depicting a Russian soldier burned to death in his tank, was dreadful.
While I am aware that such horrible things, and things even more horrible, routinely occur in war, I was unable to read the article on the Chechen war because of the photograph. I do not consider myself exceptionally squeamish, but the image was too strong, and, I believe, counter-productive. There may be a place for such picture, but I would hesitate to name it.
