ZOE Heller ('How I fell foul of New York's Sanitation Police', Review, 31 July) fails to mention that the reason New Yorkers sort their rubbish so thoroughly is so it can be recycled. I doubt whether there is a major city in Britain, or even in Europe, so committed to the environment. That a few police officers may be needed to enforce this activity seems pretty reasonable in a city as large and complex as New York.
