Louis Wolpert writes of the obligation on cancer patients to participate in clinical trials (Review, 27 July). Has it occurred to him that there may not be a final "cure"? Patients weakened by pain, confusion, anger, grief and fear should not have to take on an additional burden of guilt and responsibility. Some want to hear the language of compassion and even gentle, gradual acceptance in their darkest hour.
