YOUR article on cannabis (20 February) underestimates its documented history by 500 years. The Greek historian Herodotus observed in the fifth century BC that the Scythians (nomads of the Russian steppes) burnt cannabis in small tents, inhaling it collectively.

''The Scythians,' comments the impressionable Herodotus, 'enjoy it so much that they howl with pleasure.'
