Letter: Long division

Marios Hadjivassiliou (Letters, 29 September) promotes a familiar point of view. Yet the Greeks should remember that the 1950s Enosis movement for union with Greece combined with the campaign of violence by Eoka, the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters, caused today's situation. The Turkish invasion of 1974 was in response to the coup by Nicos Samson, inspired by the Athens junta.

I have visited Northern Cyprus twice and agree with your travel article ("North, south and the line that divides", 22 September). It is probably the loveliest place in the Mediterranean. Many people I met had lost property and businesses in the south at partition, yet none would trade the security that's been achieved.

Any future agreement would have to accommodate both communities, and Enosis would have to be abandoned for ever. The Cypriots are probably better off the way they are now.
