THE GOVERNMENT's decision to continue with the licence fee as the BBC's source of funding for its two British terrestrial channels thankfully ensures the preservation of the highest quality public service broadcasting for which the country can be proud.

What a pity the Government did not show the same reluctance to change independent television when it introduced the 1990 Broadcasting Act.
