When I saw the headline of your leading article "Repay the debt with dignity" (3 November), I thought that at last someone was urging that the state should be responsible for the welfare of war veterans, rather than the British Legion with its annual plea to the public. This would be the only dignified way for the nation to repay its debt. I would be happy to have my tax increased to meet the needs of war veterans, but I will never wear a poppy to achieve this end. Poppies and two-minute silences should have nothing to do with money.
