Michael Turner's article "Are oldies fit to be behind the wheel?" (17August) missed a vital question: how do older people get around when public transport is inadequate and essential services no longer within walking distance? Many older people continue to drive when they would prefer not to have to. Many more give up and then face increasing isolation. To describe older drivers as a "time-bomb ticking away on Britain's roads" while acknowledging that they are not a major cause of death and injury is to sensationalise an issue that needs serious attention.
