His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan sounds confident about the well-being of his Christian subjects (Letters, 30 March).

I wonder if he can tell us why thousands of these people have fled to the UK alone and why, despite our extremely rigorous immigration laws, the Government has accepted them as refugees from an oppressive regime. I suspect he will need to give firmer guarantees of liberty, equality and fraternity before many of them consider returning to their homeland.
