Charles Nevin criticises the Archbishop of Canterbury for refusing to comment, on air, about the royal divorce ("As the archbishop said to the adulterer", 7 July). Does Mr Nevin really think that a priest should, when speaking publically about morality, refer by name to individuals with whom he or she has a pastoral relationship?
And if Archbishop Cranmer, who in all conscience sanctioned two royal divorces and faithfully served a supremely adulterous monarch, did stand at Archbishop Carey's shoulder as he spoke, surely he of all people would have understood.
