Driving in France, I was alarmed at the way bridges have no pre- stressed steel barrier rails, as in this country. Had the concrete supports in the tunnel been so protected, the Mercedes would not have received the frontal impact damage that it did and lives might have been saved. The French should commemorate Diana with a programme of passive road safety measures.
